It's a Movie Day!

These kiddos have done a fabulous job this month at maintaining good behavior.  The class earned enough punches on the class card to earn a movie day. Finding Nemo was a great way to reward their good behavior and tie in our knowledge of the ocean habitat!

Living Museum

Many of our kiddos felt nostalgic going to the 1st Grade Living Museum today. We were able to navigate our way through the history of Mrs. Langford, Mrs. Underwood, Mrs. Zitzewitz, and Mrs. Kelly's classes. It was awesome seeing the creative costumes and informational posters. We spotted several famous Americans that we are actually writing about for our biography reports!

Ian spotted someone as his famous American,Neil Armstrong. Also, Luke found some facts he can use in his report about George Washington.

I think many of you can guess whose classes had patriotic streamers on their doors! Thanks to Mrs. Z and Mrs. Kelly for bringing some fun for Kali and Sienna!!!

Fun Stuff!

Today was all about Social Studies and Math. We started the day with getting in groups and reading about famous Americans. Each group had a different book and wrote at least five facts about their person.

After finding facts about their famous Americans, the students went back to their seats and wrote a paragraph of what they found.

We did a review of measurement (inches and feet) with centers. Every student had a chance to go to each station. The first station was measuring the distance a cotton ball travelled by air blown through a straw.

The second station was measuring the distance a frog leaped!

The final station was measuring the distance a race car travelled.

We are working on biographies. Today, we completed an ABCs of the special famous person we picked to write about.

A Valentine's Day to Remember

It was a special day getting to see all the students' faces so excited as they walked in the door with their Valentine's Day boxes and goodies! You can see all of the creativity below:

After taking our spelling and comprehension tests, it was a treat getting to make a life cycle of a frog craft!

Math can be so fun...when it involves conversation candy hearts!

It's finally time to pass out our Valentine's Day goodies and take group pictures!

Learning about measurement has its advantages!

Terrific Thursday!

It was a busy day today in second grade! We had a visit from Kristin Harrington. She is the Instructional Technology Program Specialist for the school district. She taught us many cool things including ChatterPix. While using ChatterPix, we were able to bring our drawings and writings to life! After Mrs. Harrington left, we went around the room to measure objects (and ourselves) in inches and feet.

"How Big is a Foot?"

I read the book "How Big is a Foot?" by Rolf Myller and then broke the kids up by table groups. Their goal was to try and make a bed that was 6 ft tall and 4 feet wide for me with precut feet. Each group had different sized feet to work with.  The groups quickly realized that if they were going to make a bed that I could actually fit in.....we needed to use a standard unit of measure!

Life Cycle of Frogs

What a fabulous day gaining knowledge about the life cycle of frogs! We learned a life cycle poem through sign language, completed a life cycle wheel (that's the "pac man-lily pads" pictured below), watched a video, and described what we knew in writing.

Animal Habitats of the World

The world is filled with many animal habitats that we can learn so much about! This week we gained a lot of knowledge on the Polar, Ocean, Pond (freshwater), Desert, Savanna (grasslands), and Rainforest habitats. The second grade team allowed our class to use the main bulletin board for our habitat writings.

Here are just a few of our writing pieces...

Habitat Fact Finders

It has been an Animal Habitats kind of week! On Tuesday, we learned about the Polar, Ocean, and Pond (freshwater) habitats. On Wednesday, we learned about the Desert, Savanna (grasslands), and Rainforest habitats. Today, each of us were assigned to a different habitat. We had to look for important information about our habitat using a Fact Finder sheet. Look at how hard we are working at being fact finders!

"Inch By Inch"

What better way to start learning about inches than gummy inchworms?! I read "Inch by Inch" by Leo Lionni and had the class draw their favorite animals. Then, they measured their animals using gummy inchworms. You and I both know that the best part was getting to eat our measuring tools at recess!!! (February 3, 2015)
